Book pick: The Country of the Blind by Andrew Leland

Andrew Leland is midway through his life with retinitis pigmentosa, a condition that ushers those who live with it from sightedness to blindness over years, even decades. Starting in his teenage years, his sight began to degrade from the outside in. Without knowing exactly when—he will likely have no vision left. Leland embarks on a exploration of not only the physical experience of blindness but also its language, politics, and customs. He negotiates his changing relationships and with his own sense of self, moving from his “typical” life to one with a disability.

Part memoir, part historical and cultural investigation, The Country of the Blind brims with warmth and humor and is an exhilarating tour of a new way of being–not to merely survive a transition but to grow from it, and seek out and revel in that which makes blindness enlightening.

Join our Members’ Choice Book Group for a lively discussion on titles chosen by the group. This group typically meets the first Wednesday of each month and is always eager to welcome new people. We will meet in the CPL STUDY Room!
